Hacking the Canon Camera with CHDK

Based on a lot of research, I decided to acquire a Canon G12 which is a pretty awesome camera for the price. One great feature is a firmware hack called the Canon Hack Development Kit (CHDK). Basically it unleashes a lot of the power available in the camera but not found in the standard Canon interface. Oh I like this!

Pinboard beats Delicious

There are various reasons to reconsider using Delicious. The first is the sale to YouTube founders, who still have no obvious real business or product idea. The second is that Pinboard has a business model. It also works better and faster. And there are many ways to use it, quite a bit of flexibility in Pinboard, including lots of Pinboard plugins. Don’t be caught out in a bad business model. It’s a good lesson. Thankfully there is an option for us Delicous users. I sure hope that someone figures away for me to get off of Flickr (out of the Yahoo ecosystem).

2012

2012 is the year the calendar ends… and a new one begins. Time to look back first, before we look forward. A new year dawns as another draws to a close. Sometimes it gets confusing. Is that a sunset or sunrise.

Hacking Android Root and Custom ROM

This year has been interesting. Turns out that without any plans at the start of the year, I’ve switched from Windows to Mac OSX and three linux machines and an iOS device. The three linux machines are the Kindle 3, Kindle Fire (Android) and an HTC Desire (Android). Well, no time like the present to get some new OSes under the belt and sharpen up the old hacking chops. Below is a description of most of the steps taking to get the HTC rooted and upgraded to Cyanogenmod 7.1 (Gingerbread).

Smartphone Hardware for 2012

There are many options for smartphones but the hardware is increasingly converging, just as it has done with desktops, laptops and netbooks. And so it is memory, screen size and pixel density, weight, processor speed, primary and secondary camera which need to be examined.

Linux and Unix-like Operating Systems

Linux and unix-like operating systems have basically won the battle, albeit on the server and mobile front rather than at the desktop. And while there will be Windows and it will continue to live on, its days are essentially numbered. How did this happen? At what point did the phone become a computer? How did Windows Mobile lose? Well that is a Ballmer story, most likely…

100-mile diet, spin farming and pocket markets

Living in Thailand, these concepts simply are the way that things are done. Having lived in Canada, I saw how it is possible for it to take place in North America. Having lived in Hawaii, I saw what it was like to have almost none of the food raised or sold within 100 miles.

Innovation and the Lead User

Innovation is the specific tool of the entrepreneur according to Peter Drucker. How this tool actually works is of deep interest. One recent book on innovation has claimed that it is not possible to innovate systematically (because failure rate is more than 50%). However, we believe this is not true. Therefore, we need to look at specifically how to systematize innovation. One place to look is at who does the innovating, and what is their relationship to the innovation.

Don’t Travel

I don’t mean to be a hater. But there is another side of the story. The so-called lifestyle gurus and permanent travelers seem convinced that their lifestyle is superior. The you too can do it is the biggest hint that their path is preferred. Certainly they don’t literally believe it, but rather it is an aspect of their aspirational advertising. Don’t believe them.
