Kontact is a bit complex, and so it needs its own page for configuration information.
Workflow
My workflow currently is to use Gmail as the main calendar provider, and connect with it via Kontact and also Etar, the Android calendar. Gmail calendar also has a few different Holiday calendars available (Thailand, Japan, United States) that I use. However, as Etar cannot support using tasks, I do not use that functionality in Gmail (nor in Kontact). I simply add whole-day events (or scheduled, as needed) as tasks in my personal calendar. This works for me though it does make using the Kontact journal non-functional.
Kontact functionality
I generally avoid the all-in-one variety of software, but for an email management tool, Kmail is great and it has other siblings under Kontact, including:
- Email (Kmail)
- Calendar
- Tasks
- Journal
- RSS reader (Akregator)
As well as various tools such as the KTnef email attachment viewer, templates, etc.
Kontact configuration
ctrl-mremoves the menu items, but in some cases there is an error when trying to invoke that again, insofar as an error notice appears stating that the shortcut is ambiguous, even though there is no evidence of shortcut duplication. See KDE bug 381538. See also all the ambiguous shortcuts bugs.- There are several different toolbars depending what part of the app one has selected. So configure them until that works for you. Then go ahead and save backups of the
~/.config/k*files. - more
