Tasks (open)

  • Deploy more anti-bot measures on the website
  • Enable caching on Gcore
  • Install and configure Ejabbard server for domain: mcneill.info
    • Migrate users from chat.mcneill.im to mcneill.info XMPP
    • For Slack / Discord replacements, see: Zulip, Mattermost, Rocket Chat, NextCloud Chat, Ejabberd.
      • Honestly, I have
  • Add useragent 'montastic-monitor http://www.montastic.com' whitelist

Tech stuff

  • Added the deb-multimedia apt source. See note at top of OBS project.
  • TLS on packages.sury.org seems to have expired. Added a comment on a newly opened issue on the codeberg git tracker https://codeberg.org/oerdnj/deb.sury.org/issues/27
  • Want to look at the Gin web framework (Go-lang) https://gin-gonic.com/en/docs/
  • Lots of stuff happening with the ATproto, which I've previously been unaware:
  • Clearsky.app can actually see accounts on Bsky and Blacksky and provides some insight into the, e.g., regarding blocks, lists, etc. Note that jd-vance-1.bsky.social is the top blocked account (nearly double that of second place), with 156,459 blocks.
  • Found out about umami which is analytics without cookies (self-hosted forever free)
  • Found out about Libation basically for liberating Audible audiobooks. I don't have any, and don't really listen to audiobooks in general, but an interesting project.
  • A crap-load of domain names are getting their prices jacked (enshittification, naturally). I've already started moving off of the .io which though not on the list above, has been adding about $10 per year to the prices. I'm going with .info and .com which still have reasonable prices.

Other

  • Really sick to my stomach about all the Trump crap including mainly fascism (destroying institutions, deploying troops, murdering people in boats on the high seas, supporting the Gaza and West Bank terror, not supporting Ukraine, and so much more), but also reversing our efforts on the Climate crisis. Anyone still not clued in on what they are doing to government institutions and why that is important, and perilous, needs to read Michael Lewis' The Fifth Risk, which was about the 2016 Trump Election and transition, and what it means. And The Premonition (about the COVID-19 pandemic), for good measure.
  • Marc Andreessen is a traitor -- on point.
  • Got a new LG washing machine. The 15kg model (top-load) was 7,000 THB on sale. If I remember correctly I paid that or a little more for an 8kg model about 5 years ago. We overused it, and wore it out, so the much larger model should serve us well. Honestly surprised at the affordability of these.
  • Interesting reading on interstellar objects. A third one near Earth's orbit was recently discovered. Oumuamua, the first such object, discovered in 2017, could come from one of four systems, though indeed we don't have enough data to say more than that, and many more candidates are possible.

Books

  • Reading The Secrets of the Silent Witch, light novels for me, manga for boys, and anime for us all. Finished up with the series (sadly, will have to wait a few months for the next volume). Anime is ok also.
  • Reading Campfire Cooking in another World, simultaneously watching the anime.

Music

  • Playing with Suno AI for music. Impressive. I've put 7 of Tagore's poems to it with decent results. The first one is below in embedded YouTube. There are many copies of this poem on YouTube but all are mostly statically read (and not very well). I turns out Tagore's poems are very lyrical in a musically way, and once you get a good result from Suno it can well unveil the poem in greater color.
  • Updated my Prince collection. Had no idea how large his discography actually was. Genius.
