Linux apps

These are the apps that I currently (or more recently) run in various Linux distributions (mainly Debian), for desktop and server.

Linux destop apps

By desktop I mean those apps I run only on the desktop (not console-based apps that can run on a headless remote server). I'm a fan of XFCE which I use as the desktop environment. It includes a variety of applications, many of which I use, some of which I do not.

XFCE apps

Note that uninstalling some of these pre-installed / included applications will start a process of uninstalling dependencies which then uninstalls other apps that were not meant to be uninstalled (aka that one still uses). So have to leave some of these residual apps alone, such as: Ristretto image viewer (I install, and prefer, Gthumb).

Actually there are a lot of apps/applets in XFCE.

Included in XFCE but I currently do not use:

  • Mousepad (text editor) -- instead use vscodium
  • Parole (media player) -- instead use mpv and vlc
  • Ristretto (image viewer) -- instead use gThumb

Included in XFCE/Debian but I uninstall it:

  • Firefox ESR

Included in XFCE/Debian and I do use:

  • Document viewer (Evince) (Gnome)
  • GIMP
  • LibreOffice

Included in XFCE (but otherwise also installable regardless of desktop environment):

  • Clipman
  • Thunar
  • xfce-terminal

Not included in XFCE/Debian:

  • Audacity audio editor
  • Blender 3d editor, animator
  • Calibre ebook/pdf library manager
  • Dino XMPP client
  • FreeFileSync (open source, non-free for auto-updates, and worth it)
  • Friction 2d animation
  • Galculator
  • Gnome disks
  • Godot game editor
  • Gthumb image viewer, manager
  • Image Scan for Linux! scanner tool
  • Inkscape SVG editor
  • KeePassXC password vault
  • Kontact (including Kmail, calendar, and Akgregator an RSS feed reader)
    • Note, as my Android calendar Etar does not support tasks, I simply use the calendar for all tasks and events- Krita image editor, 2d graphics
  • mpv video player
  • OBS Studio video composting and recording
  • Quod Libet audio player
  • Reaper (not open source) DAW
  • Shotcut video editor
  • vlc video player (works better over slow SAMBA links)
  • VSCodium text editor

Browser

I find that Ungoogled Chromium is best for my needs, with Vivaldi a second choice. I install these using Flatpak, as that causes the least amount of upgrade trouble. For some reason
