Over the years I have been a fan and consumer of Xiaomi products including several phones, electronics of all types, backpacks, etc. Since they tend to enshittify, that is get crappier over time, I've scaled back and have found better substitutes. The following are not yet out of our house, though many will be be once decent competitors arrive, or even perhaps before that:
- Xiaomi AX1500 Wifi router - annoyingly I had to install an app to even manage this. Sigh. Would not buy again, though the price was quite good.
- Xiaomi Mi Smart Speaker - this now seems to be unavailable, unsure what has replaced this. It is definitely better than a Google home/nest replacement in price and functionality. Can be managed through the Google Home app. I'd buy again. But since it is unavailable, Xiaomi has removed that option from me.
- Xiaomi portable bluetooth speaker - not the really tiny one, this is a fantastic portable speaker, though more than 1,000 baht. I'd buy again.
- Miband 8 pro. This is still great, though the software is crap. Still, can't find its like that has GPS at the price, and the form factor on the wrist can't be beat. Try searching for a decent watch face, and it usually ends in tears. If the Samsung Smart Band 3 had GPS I would switch. Ok, I may switch anyway, that's how annoyingly bad the ad-crammed app actually is.
- Xiaomi Soundbar 2.0 channel. I don't have this yet, but for 1,200 baht it looks great for the TV (which currently doesn't have any kind of soundbar). To be honest, we don't experience how low quality the sound may be, coming from the internal television speakers. Why invest? No compelling reason.
- Xiaomi MiPad 4 - This is actually pretty cool once you can get LinneageOS on it. However, they've since made it even harder to be able to jailbreak. I don't even need root, just the ability to install a ROM. So I've got one of these each for my sons, one with LinneageOS Android 9, and one with MiOS with Android 8. A world of difference. Sigh.
