The Five R’s of Sustainability

Respect for Things - Respect for the Environment - Avoid Wastefulness

Refuse (Most Effective)

  • What it means: Say "no to single-use items, unwanted handouts, and buying things you don't actually need.
  • Goal: Stop waste at the very source.

Rehome

  • What it means: Pass along functional items you no longer use to friends, neighbors, or local communities who can use them.
  • Goal: Keep items circulating locally instead of letting them sit unused (e.g., via donations or Buy Nothing groups).

Reuse

  • What it means: Keep products and materials in active use for as long as possible in their original form.
  • Goal: Maximize the lifespan of everyday items.

Renew

  • What it means: Repair, restore, or recharge existing goods, mend items as needed, and transition to regenerative resources (like composting and renewable energy).
  • Goal: Fix what is broken rather than buying new, and replenish natural cycles.

Recycle (Last Resort)

  • What it means: Break down discarded materials into raw components to manufacture new goods.
  • Goal: Divert necessary waste from landfills when it can no longer be refused, rehomed, reused, or renewed.
